Tips For Toddler Safety | Baby Safety Month

I had never heard of baby safety month before, but I am wishing that I had all of this valuable information available back when I was a first time mom.  Now that I am a mom of three, I have definitely learned some things, and guess what? I am still getting things wrong and learning all new ways to make my house more toddler proof. I had no idea what I was getting into when I had my third child. He is one (almost 2!) and the busiest of all the busy bodies in all the land. I thought I would share with you some toddler safety tips that I have found helpful and that have made it so that I can rest a little easier knowing that I have safety precautions in place to help me keep him safe. 

My son is a climber. I don’t know if you have ever had a climber before (I hadn’t) but there is nothing that he can’t reach. There are so many things on the counters in my home that I never had to worry about with my two older girls when they were younger, but I am finding them being a danger to my son now. All sharp objects needed to be removed from the counters, and all drawers and cupboards on the lower cabinets have child locks on them. I learned the hard way that drawers can be used as a ladder, and that the drawers will break if they are used that way. I can’t even tell you the amount if times that I have found Carter sitting on the counter getting into things that he shouldn’t be, and now that he can push the kitchen chairs around, it is almost impossible to keep him off of the counters. The best that I can do is to remove all danger from the counter tops and never leave a hot stove unattended.  (The photo below is from one day when I found him like this. That is Nesquick powder….a COSTCO sized container of Nesquick powder!)

The dreaded day came way too early. You know what day I am talking about. The day that Carter learned how to open all of the doors. We had originally had door knobs that were just handles that you pull, so we replaced them. The circular knobs are so much harder to open….at least for a week. That’s when I found out that Carter knew how to open the front door that we had changed the knob on. I heard the door open–I was upstairs–and ran downstairs to see that the front door was open. I found him standing in the middle of the street trying to go visit our neighbors across the street. It was a terrifying moment for me. I immediately got child locks to put on all of the door knobs leading outside, and I know they are good because very few adults or children can open the door now. 🙂
