cow headband kid's craft

This week, as part of our Kid’s Craft Camp, we are focusing on the farm and farm animals. To get things started, there was no better thing I could think of than making cow headbands with my kids. The very best part of all of this is that when I asked them if they wanted to take pictures wearing their headbands, they immediately put their headbands on, ran outside, dropped to the ground and started mooing and pretending to eat grass. Ha! Isn’t that so funny. I loved that they got into character.

We talked about cows and the things that they eat, the things that we can do with their milk (cheeses, ice cream, butter etc) and where they live. I don’t think we had ever talked about the fact that milk could be used in so many ways, and Addie really seemed to be interested in learning more about it and how it works. I’m thinking we have some ice cream making to do in our near future.

Making them is so simple. Start by cutting 4 inch strips of white cardstock. I bought a few 12X12 pieces and then cut each into 3 equal pieces, but each headband is actually made with two of the pieces. I then grabbed some pink cardstock and cut out a nose shape that kind of looks like a bean. Last, I used a piece of black cardstock to cut out the rest of the shapes. You’ll need two ovals for the nose, two circles for the eyes, two triangles for the ears, and some random circular shapes for the spots.

Grab one of the white strips of paper and start by gluing the nose in the center of the strip. Then glue the black ovals onto the pink nose. Next, glue the eyes, ears, and spots into place. Once the glue has dried, staple another strip to the first strip on one side. Before stapling the second side, measure it around your kid’s head so that you know that it will fit just right. There is nothing worse than a cow head falling in your eyes. 🙂

Lillie made her own cow headband, and I love the way that it turned out. Addie just wanted to glue, so I cut out the parts and let her get to it. Both headbands are very fun, and Carter even got in on the action by using Addie’s headband and mooing along with the girls. It was probably the cutest thing in the world.

I hope you liked this kid’s craft and that you’ll check back throughout this week (and the rest of the summer) to see more projects and learning ideas to do with your kids.
