Holiday themed treats are one of my new favorite things. There is something so satisfying about creating a treat that is also a craft. Plus, it has been a great activity for me to do with my girls after school. This week, we decided to make Nutter Butter Reindeer Cookies. We decided that we definitely needed to make all 8 of the reindeer that pull the sleigh, along with a Rudolph to finish off the set, and I really think they turned out so cute!
The best part about making these cookies (other than eating them) is that they are so simple to make! You’ll need just a few supplies to get started.
- Nutter butter Cookies (original as well as the snack size) I picked mine up at Walmart in the cookie and cracker aisle.
- Milk chocolate chips
- Wilton Reindeer Cupcake Decorating Kit (I found it at Walmart with the other holiday baking supplies, and it has the eyes, antlers, bows, and black noses in it.)
- Jelly Bellies (you only need one red one since the other jelly beans are already in the Wilton kit)
- Wax Paper
- Cookie Tray
You’ll start by melting the chocolate chips. Use a microwave safe bowl and half a bag of chocolate chips, heat in the microwave for 45 seconds. Stir it and then put back in the microwave for 15 second intervals, stirring each time, until the chocolate is a nice creamy melted texture.
Once you have your chocolate melted, you’re going to dip your Nutter Butter cookies into it, but only one side. You can do both sides, but I found that it made things really messy and the chocolate to peanut butter taste was off balance. After you get the cookie dipped, place it on the wax paper that is on the cookie sheet with the un-dipped side down. Then, put the snack size nutter butters into the chocolate and cover them completely. You’ll want to make sure there isn’t too much excess chocolate on the bottom by scraping it on the edge of the bowl as you remove it. Stick it onto the other cookies that you’ve already covered, and then you are ready to decorate.
I recommend only doing 10 reindeer cookies or so at a time so that the chocolate doesn’t harden before you are able to get to this point. Now that the little cookies are attached to the larger ones, you’ll need to add the eyes, jelly bean noses, and you can even add the little bow ties or hair bows to the reindeer if you would like to. At this point, I would put the cookie sheet into the freezer to give the chocolate a chance to harden.
After the chocolate has had a chance to harden, you’ll want to add the antlers to the cookies. I found that the easiest way to do it was to dip the ends of the antlers into the melted chocolate, put two on the cookie sheet, and then place the cookie on top of the antlers. Do this for all of the cookies and then place back into the freezer.
That’s it! I know it seems like a lot, but it goes by really quickly and you’ll have your reindeer done before you know it. To help you get started, there is a coupon for the Nutter Butter cookies that you can use at any Walmart. Grab it and go get your cookies ready for your next holiday get together. These are SURE to be a big hit!
