My daughter decided that for her 4th birthday, she wanted to have a Halloween themed birthday party. Her birthday falls on October 1st, so it worked for me! We decided that we wanted to have everyone come dressed in costumes, and thought that making awards would help incentivize everyone to participate. On the invite, we let everyone know that there would be awards for the best costumes, and then I got to work! I had so much fun planning this party and putting together all of the details, but these Halloween costume awards were probably my most favorite thing.

Costume Trophies

I got the tutorial for how to put together the trophies over at Make it and Love it, so go check it out there. Her tutorial is amazing and so easy to follow. I do have some things that I did differently though, so keep reading to see how I did mine.

First, I went to the dollar store to pick up some skeletons for the trophies. The selection was a little bit limited, though, and I didn’t have the same type that was used in the tutorial. I did find a really great skeleton banner that I knew would work great! For only a dollar, I had enough skeletons to make all of the trophies! I call that a win! Here is the best part of this. I only spent one dollar on making all four of the trophies!!! Seriously. I had all of the rest of the supplies already, so it was inexpensive and so fun to make!

Once I had the skeletons attached to the dowels and the holes drilled for the dowel to go into, I took them all out to my garage to spray paint them gold. I left them overnight and then the next day is when the REAL fun started.

I loved some of the ideas that Ashley had in her tutorial, like the clown, bumble bee, and the milk duds, so I made my trophies similar to hers. Since the skeletons that I used were smaller, the milk duds wouldn’t work for me, so I went with Sugar Babies instead.

Most Unique Costume Trophy

I wanted to make a “scariest costume” award, and thought that a witch would be the perfect fit for that! I used some felt, hot glue, and some glittery fabric to create the witch. The hat is simple to make. All you need to do is cut a circle of felt, cut a slit to the center, and twist it into a cone shape. I had to cut off some excess fabric to get it the shape that I needed, but then I hot glued it to another circle which was the brim. To get the hat to stay on the head, I cut a small slit in the bottom center of the hat and then slipped it onto the head with some hot glue to hold in place.

Scariest Costume Trophy

The hat on the Sugar Babies costume was made in the same basic way as the hat. Simply cut a circle out of patterned paper, cut a slit to the center and then wrap it into a cone shape cutting off a little bit of the excess paper. I added a cute pom pom to the top too.

Funniest Costume Trophy

I decided to make the clown hair multi-colored and LOVED the way it turned out.

Trophy Idea

Once all of my trophies were costumed, I wanted to label them. It was super easy with my Silhouette machine and some black vinyl from Expressions Vinyl. I cut it out and put it on the front of the trophies.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME AWARDS

They were a definite hit at the party, and I can’t even wait to show you the costumes everyone wore! They were AMAZING! Come back tomorrow for some costume ideas since Halloween is right around the corner.
