Valentines Day craft for kids

I love decorating for Valentines Day.  Maybe it’s because I have a house full of girls and we finally have an excuse to put up some pink.  Whatever the reason, I like to have my kids be involved in the decorations.  I wanted to share with you this fun Valentines Day craft for kids that I like to also use for decoration!  These stained glass hearts are so easy to make and I love the way they look hanging in my window.

***This is definitely an activity that requires adult supervision and is better suited for older kids.  There are parts that young kids can help with as well.  ****

Stained Glass Hearts

Supplies:

  • Wax paper
  • Old crayons
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Fishing line or invisible thread

To begin, you will need to take all of the paper off of the crayons.  I decided to go with pink, red and purple for our hearts but you can use any colors you would like!  This is the perfect job for everyone to help with!  My 2 year old went to town pulling off papers and had fun doing it!  After the paper is removed, use the pencil sharpener to make crayon shavings.

Take your wax paper and place it on a piece of fabric that you don’t care about.  You will want the wax side up.  Dump your wax shavings on the wax paper in a thin layer.  I liked having spots of color instead of it turning into a big blob of all of the colors mashed together.  Keep repeating the process of shaving the crayons and pouring them on the wax paper until it is pretty well covered.  When you feel like you have enough, take another piece of wax paper and place wax side down on top of the crayon shavings.

Now you are ready to add some heat.  You will be using your iron to melt the wax. Place another piece of scrap fabric on top of the wax paper and then iron over the top.  It will melt very quickly.  Try not to move around the iron and do more of picking up and placing the iron to make sure that the crayon colors stay separated.

Once you have melted the crayon.  Pull the fabric back and check out your work!  It will only take a little bit for the crayon to harden again leaving you with a stained glass looking piece of wax paper.  Your kids will think it is the coolest thing ever!  I know mine did!

Next, you will cut out some hearts.  I used a piece of computer paper and created a heart template and used it to cut out all of my hearts.  Once they were cut, my girls used some washi tape to attach the hearts to some invisible thread and hung them up on my window.  I guided them to where the hearts should go, but they liked being able to tape them up themselves!

I really do love the look of it hanging there!  Good luck making some of your own!  Let me know if you have any questions.
