Halloween is my favorite.  I know I’ve said it before, and I will definitely say it again.  I just wanted to make sure we were clear.

Moving on.

I wanted to make a fun centerpiece that I could use for Halloween, and when the fellows at Silhouette sent me their glass etching kit, the wheels started turning and I think I came up with something pretty dang cool. (if I do say so myself)  Check out my SPOOKY Halloween centerpiece.

A year or so ago, I bought three of these glass jars from the thrift store for a dollar each.  I loved the shape and size, and at a dollar each, I couldn’t pass them up.  I have had them sitting on a shelf since then not really sure the best way to use them.  I decided this was the perfect way to use one of them.  If you would like to make this centerpiece for yourself, here’s what you need to get started:

I began by painting the INSIDE of my jar black.  To do that, I mixed 2 parts paint to one part water in a plastic cup so that it was easier to pour, and then poured the paint into the jar.  After the paint was in the jar, I simply turned it to each side until the whole jar was covered.

While that dried, I pulled up my Silhouette software and downloaded a spider web pattern from the online store and cut it out using the stencil vinyl that comes in the etching kit.  (FYI, in the kit, the stencil vinyl is the white, and the transfer paper is the brown)  I cut it out and then used the hook (also included in the etching kit) to weed out the little pieces of the spider web that I didn’t need.  That is the part that took the longest.

I cleaned the outside of the jar to make sure that the vinyl would adhere really well and then wrapped it all the way around.  Then, I applied the etching cream using the instructions that came with the cream. I recommend using a cotton swab to put a bunch of the cream on the jar and then using the scraper to distribute quickly.  Clean off the cream, take off the vinyl and ta-da!  It worked great!

I love the subtle look of the vase.  I added the twigs and spider rings to give it the final touch.  The rings are from Target, and the twigs are from my mom’s house.
