DIY Wheat Wreath
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know that fall is my very favorite time of the year. I have been itching to pull out my fall decor and bake something pumpkin-y for weeks now. Last week, I caved and decided to pull out my fall and Halloween decorations. My husband thinks it is a little too soon, but I figure that I keep it classy and subtle so that it isn’t in your face Halloween which makes it ok to pull it out now.
After I got my decor out, I decided that I needed something new that I could keep up through November. My DIY wheat Wreath was just the right project! I am thrilled with the way it looks!
Let me give you the quick run down of how to make this wreath. It only cost me $20 to make and about 1 1/2 hours is all.
Supplies:
- Wheat (I got mine from Hobby Lobby in both the gold and black colors. I liked the look of them combined. They cost $5 per bundle, but I got them when they were each on sale for 50% off. I bought 5 bundles but only used 3)
- Grapevine wreath (I also bought this at Hobby Lobby. It is in the floral section and costs $7 for the oval wreath. You can choose a round wreath if you would like, I just liked the oval shape)
- Wire (I chose some really thin pliable wire. It doesn’t need to be really heavy duty. )
- Scissors and wire cutters
You will begin by grabbing a bundle of wheat, cutting the stems down and arranging it so that it isn’t all at the same height. Place it on the wreath and use a piece of wire to hold it in place. Repeat this process until the entire wreath is covered.
Once I had the whole wreath covered, I decided that the tops of the wheat were too long and cut them off. It may have been easier to do this before I started my wreath, but it wasn’t too hard to do it with the wheat attached. It does make a huge mess, however.
It’s done! It is a very simple and organic wreath that is perfect for your fall decor. The only thing that I keep going back and forth on (and then reason it isn’t hanging on the wall yet) is if the wreath needs some sort of bow or something on it as well. What is your vote? A burlap bow? Leave it alone? I would love to hear what you think!
I just stumbled upon this, and it’s lovely. If you haven’t decided on a bow yet, I think it would be nice with an orange ribbon for hanging. Burlap would be nice as well. Thank you for sharing!
