How to Make Money Blogging
It is the biggest question in the blogging world. Â “I have a blog, but how do I make money blogging?” Â Over the last 2 1/2 years, I have really learned a lot about this topic. Â Am I earning a million dollars? Â Not even close, BUT I am making some money and you can too! Â Blogging takes a lot of time, and it is nice to make a little money while doing it.
Here are the 5Â best ways that I have found for how to make money blogging:
1. Ad Networks
All of these ad networks work about the same way. Â You either get paid per impression or per click. Â Those are two VERY different things, so make sure you know which is the one that you are getting paid for. Â All you need to do is sign up with them and then place ads on your sidebar. Â EASY way to make some money. Â (Remember that where you place your ads and the amount of ads you have on your page is going to directly effect the amount of money you make.)
HyperX Media– These guys are awesome!  Seriously.  They are really great about helping you with any problems on your site, they do a full SEO evalutation, and also help you make changes so that you drive more traffic to your site.  They have awesome suggestions and are very approachable.  If you sign up with them, would you mind telling them that I sent you?  They do offer a referral incentive 🙂
Rivit Media– I have worked with them before. Â They pay regularly and they will accept pretty much anyone to join their network.
2. Affliates
There are a lot of companies that offer affiliate programs. Â The basic idea behind it is that for every sale that is made through your link, you get a certain percentage of the sale. Â The percent will change depending on each company and their policy, so make sure you know when you sign up what you are signing up for.
Is there a company that you find yourself buying from often? Â Find out if they have an affiliate program. Â It is the easiest way to promote a product because if you love the product, you probably have readers or friends that would enjoy buying it as well. Â If they are going to buy it anyway, why not have them buy the item through your link so that you earn a little money from it?
Here are some affiliates that I personally use:
Tiny Prints– They usually have really good promotions for free cards or discounted items that are really cute. Â I don’t promote this one very often and should probably promote it more.
Amazon– Such an easy affiliate program to apply for and use. Â They make it really easy to share your affiliate links. Â Plus they allow cookies which will make it so that if people click on your link but don’t buy the item you shared, you will get credit for any other purchases they make within a certain time period.
Pick Your Plum– If you haven’t heard of Pick Your Plum, you need to. Â It is a daily deals site that sells really cute stuff! Â This is the best affiliate program I have and the one I make the most money with. Â You get a really good percentage of the sale, PLUS you can use your own link to purchase your own items from their site. Â It is like getting a discount on an already awesome price. Â You can register to be an affiliate on their site using this link.
3. Sponsored Posts
Social Spark– This is a company that brings bloggers and companies together. Â They give you leads for sponsors that are looking for a post to be written for them, and the price that goes along with it. Â You see the price and the opportunity including what the sponsor is requiring in the post before you make any commitments. Â If you are ok with the payment and the terms, you say that you are interested in the lead. Â The sponsors will then look at the blogs that are interested and choose which ones to use. Â If you are chosen, you will then be extended an offer and then you write the post in exchange for money. Â There are a lot of leads that come to me that aren’t a good fit for my blog. Â Make sure you are selective in the offers you choose so that you are staying true to who you are and what you want your blog to represent.
4. Sidebar Ads
You should offer some sort of sidebar advertising. Â In the beginning, offer it at a really low, reasonable rate. Â Once you get ads in place, make sure that you are doing a good job of advertising the sponsor. Â If they like what you do, they will want to stick around.
5. Sell Something
This is an obvious one to some, but not to others. Â Find something that you are really great at making. Â What do you make that people are always telling you that they love and/or think you should sell? Â If you can think of something, DO IT! Â make a page on your blog that is dedicated to selling things. Â I have a page below my header titled “Shop” where I sell thing occasionally. Â I use Paypal to embed a Buy Now button on my blog which makes it really easy for people to buy from my site. Â The easier it is to purchase something, the more likely it will happen.
If you aren’t the crafty type, what are you knowledgeable in?  Maybe you could make an e-book to sell to others that would teach them a concept or a project of some kind.
The VERY best advice I can give to anyone wanting to get their name out there? Â Network. Â The more people you know the more opportunities you will have open to you. Â Don’t be afraid to go to that blog conference or that get together you heard about. Â Not only will you have fun, you will meet people that could likely connect you with companies that are looking to work with new bloggers.
Let me know if you have any questions since I know this is a ton of information in a very condensed format. Â I hope this is helpful!
*as a disclosure, I am not being paid to write this post, but I am using my personal affiliate links. Â Just trying to share what I have learned and what has worked for me.
This is a GREAT post with some good ideas! I also love HyperX… only been with them for a week or 2, but so far I’m happy with them. I’m pretty sure I met you at BYBC, and I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been over here to say hi! This post got me over here, and I’m absolutely going to be sticking around.
Thank you for the detailed post, I learned a few things! I think Google ad network is one of the easiest (you can choose between text or image ads, customize the sizes and colors, etc). I wish I could think of the plugin I recommend to display them. Also, Google has an affiliate network with many different brands you can choose from.
As far as affiliate marketing there are 3 networks you can join and find just about anything to sell. They are – ShareASale, Linkshare and Commission Junction (CJ.com).

Thanks for the interesting articles and your recommendations.
I am a big fan of sponsored blogs and this is the first time I’ve heard of Social Sparks. I have been an avid Teliad user, which from your explanation is similar to Social Sparks. What I like about Teliad is that it does give you monthly earnings and has a wide variety of intangible products which I can offer giving me more flexibility. I agree though, that you have to be picky on which offer to accept, I guess there is no give and take from either perspective here.
Great info….that’s for your help. My daughter is encouraging me to write a blog. My family had a tragic experience a year ago. Our son committed suicide. After spending TOO many days on the couch I got interested in Pinterest. As of this morning I have over 10,000 followers, most on my garden page. I am pouring myself in my yard and garden. It has become my therapy! Thanks for listening!

Very helpful tips for bloggers! Thanks for sharing!
Superb post! I’m so glad I found this. I learned so much from this fantastic post. Thanks!
How did you make the SHOP page? I have a few things to sell on my site but don’t know how to make a page like that. 😀
Great question. I do all of my transactions through paypal. They have the buy now buttons available through their website and they are customizable. All you do is design it and then upload the HTML coding into your page. Hope that helps!
Thank you!!!
This is really helpful information. I just registered for Pick Your Plum and sent off a request to become an affiliate. And I’ll be looking at the others you suggested too.
The only thing I’ve tried so far is Amazon Affiliates, but I live in MO and the state just changed some law that has to do with tax, so Amazon no longer works with bloggers who live in my state. It never really did much for me anyway…in several years I ended up making $10!
Time to find some better paying opportunities!
I’m so glad that it was useful to you! Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you so much for posting. I just started blogging and really really love doing it. If I could could make some $ during the process, it would just be the icing on the cake. Thanks so much for sharing. Have a wonderful day.
Thanks so much for this post! I found it via Pinterest and it’s answered a lot of my questions in terms of how to make my blog more like part of my job. I wanted to let you know I’ve mentioned you in my latest post – http://lydiadickson.blogspot.com/2014/03/days-oh-days57-78.html and am following your blog and other posts too now. Thanks again!
Simply it’s a parallel idea to Pay Per Click advertisements from Adwords.
Synchro Deflector – Now straight in the decks of Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s top duelists
Yusei Fudo and Jack Atlas we have the trap card Synchro Deflector.
Eventually retailers including Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target may have older sets taking on valuable shelf space and they’ll reduce the prices to reduce
them.
Love these tips. Please consider changing your links to open in a new window as I hated losing your blog every time I clicked something.
Hey Jonie! I’m glad I landed on this web page! Very well written! In number four, “Sidebar Ads”, how do you base your price points for each webpage’s sidebar? Do you charge a flat rate based from the number of page views in Analytics? Or do you base your charge from the depth you will advertise each sponsor (i.e. do you offer different levels of advertisement space, minimal, average, extensive)? I hope this makes sense 😉
Anyways, thanks for sharing this content! I love reading what tools and tactics other’s use to monetize their online businesses! Compliments to your wonderful layout and design appeal! I cannot wait to mosey around and see what your up to here + check out your Shop!

Thank you so much for those great tips. Did most of what you suggested this morning, now crossing my fingers :).
I absolutely loved this blog. Thank you so much, this has been the most helpful blog for me!!
Thanks for all this info…I am literally JUST starting out with my blog about writing and reading, and am trying to learn as much as I can about blogging!
Great tips! Thanks!
Just wanted to add a bit of my experiences.
I started my second blog about a month ago and I’m finding out fast that blogging is a challenge and making money from it is even more so.
The tip I’d offer to anyone considering is this- Create your blog with content at the forefront. Without it, there’s no blog to monetize.
My blog is http://buildfinancialfreedom.net If any of you guys would like to check it out.
This is the best article I have seen in this subject. Most people talk about it but they don’t give you real leads! Thank you!
Hey…thanks for this post. great info that I hadn’t heard before, I hadn’t worked with either of those ad networks or heard of Social Spark! I really appreciate the tips!
Megan C
I’m just starting out, so I’ll be checking out all your suggestions. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Jonie, thanks a lot!!
Thank you so much for the tips! I have been wanting to start a blog for quite a while, but feel so overwhelmed with how to start it. I’m now just trying to fill my brain up with tips from articles like this.
Thanks again!
How much is reasonable to ask sites to pay for a sidebar ad?
nice and very inspiring. Tnx
This post has been very helpful. I didn’t know about affiliate programs. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this information. I am enjoying blogging. Started in 2009 and then I neglected it! But, im ready now!
I really appreciate this post. Was very helpful!! I love your positive and upbeat attitude about all this.
Your information is fabulous! I really could use some advice and appreciate you taking your time. I am wanting to set up a working Blog. I have a new Business All About You Life Coaching, and I am wanting to incorporate my business with my Blog that will be directed to a specific targeted group that I believe will want to take advantage of my service, In other words I would like to draw clients that wish to be coached from my Blog, while offering my followers a wide range of variety, such as fashion, recipes, fun living type things on my Blog..is this doable? I don’t have a website as of yet, as I don’t feel ready for one yet. I’m a writer and am interested in public speaking. I am totally new to this world, but am excited and challenged to learn it’s language, Any advice would be appreciated, and again thank you for your informative information !
Sincerely,
Kellie Johnson with All About You Life Coaching
Thank you for this post. I just started getting about 500 views after working at blogging for a coupe months and my next step is gaining money from blogging. It seems a little daunting but this article helps clear up some of my questions. 🙂
Do I have to use bluehost? I’ve heard a lot of negatives about them
I just recently launched my blog and will like to eventually monetize it. Great info. Thanks for sharing!
Prefect thank you so much!!! I only have Cozi (an app taht I directly contacted), Amazon, and ShareASale. ShareASale is great if you want to have products from other companies that may not offer a direct affiliate program like Wayfair.com. I will be signing up for Social Spark and look into Pick your Plum. My blog is about organization so I will have to see the products Pick my Plum has. Again, thank you!!!
Thank’s for sharing valuable information.A lot of people spend hundreds of hours over the internet to know how to earn money online. Your suggestion is helpful to newbie’s. I agree with you in Affiliate marketing that by simply promoting products you can earn big money. I am doing blogging for sometime now and I’m making fair enough money from my blog.
That’s quite a detailed list. Starting out with affiliate marketing on my site. Let’s see if it works for me or not!
