something to read

Everyone gives at least one book for Christmas, right? Personally, I would be thrilled if I received only books for Christmas. Did you know that Amazon has a deal right now for 30% off any one book? It ends Monday, so you should order soon. Use the code HOLIDAY30  and it will automatically take 30% off the most expensive book in your cart.  Now, if you need some good book recommendations, I’ve got you covered.

For the tiniest ones in your life:

Open the Barn Door

This book is very small and very simple. Both of my girls have loved it from the time they were tiny. Books with flaps are always a good choice.

Don’t Bite

I recently ordered a pack of these cute dino-books for my two year old. She has a tendency to bite anyone who annoys her. We are working on it and I’m hopeful these books will help.

Goodnight, Gorilla

This book is a classic. Very few words, lots of delight. It doesn’t take long for kids to learn to “read” this one on their own.

For Preschoolers and up:

The Book With No Pictures

This one is pretty popular and its a fan favorite at our house. It’s the book that makes grown ups say silly things. The giggling that ensues is the very best part.

Mae and the Moon

My cousin recommended this book on Instagram a few weeks ago. I gave it to my four-year-old for her birthday and it was love at first read. It even has a chart in the back cover showing the phases of the moon and what each is called.  Awesome.

This Book Just Ate My Dog

Don’t tell my kids, but they’re getting this one for Christmas. It’s fun and fresh and I’m pretty confident they will love it. Self aware books are always clever.

Longer Books-good for early readers or for reading aloud at any age:

Winnie-the-Pooh

Everyone knows Winnie-the-Pooh, but if you’ve never actually read the original books, you are really missing out. They are so clever and well written. We’ve read them aloud together a few times and we love them.

Charlotte’s Web

We read this one together a while ago. It’s a classic and I had forgotten how sweet it is. My little bug aficionado really appreciated the detailed descriptions of spiders and their habits.

For adding to your own list:

The Lake House

This isn’t the Sandra Bullock movie, it’s Kate Morton’s latest. Like all of her books, it’s a page turner. “Forgotten Garden” and “Secret Keeper” are still my favorites from her, but I give this one a solid 4 stars.

The Nightingale

If you are a fan of Historical Fiction, you will love this one. Its set in France during World War II. It’s a story told from the perspectives of two sisters. Its very well done. You won’t want to put it down.

The Glass Castle

This one is an incredible memoir. I loved the way she wrote her story. Her tone makes you feel like she is a completely unbiased observer. She portrays even those who wrong her with no trace of bitterness. I loved it.

For anyone:

Harry Potter- Illustrated

Do you know about this? I ordered it as soon as I heard. The artwork is stunning and the fact that it’s illustrated made me decide to read it to my kids right away. They love it and I love re-reading a favorite along with them. It would also make a great coffee table book, because it’s that beautiful.

HONY Stories

Anyone who is wondering what to buy me, take note. I love Humans of New York. I love having a glimpse into the lives of regular people who live life differently than I do. The photos are always excellent and the stories are intriguing. It’s quite the one-book-fits-all Christmas gift.

The Nativity

This is another one that I’d like to own, but don’t. I love J. Kirk Richard’s art. This book includes seventeen of his depictions of the Christmas story, along with text from the Gospels. It’s gorgeous and perfect for the season.
